The administrative regional division of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia included by the Royal Decree No. A/92 dated 27/8/1412H is based on the regional government system and is regarded as the basis of collection, distribution, and publication of geographical and statistical data, where the Kingdom is divided into 13 regions as follows:

The Administrative Region is divided into several governorates, its numbers differ from one region to another. The governorate is divided into municipalities that are administratively related to governorates of Emarah.

 

The governorates, municipalities, and Emarahs include a number of geographical names (cities, villages, rural town, water source community, and desert community) that are all connected administratively to the governorate, municipality, or Emara. For census reasons, a directory of geographical names was prepared.

 

This directory has a specific number that identifies every administrative region Emara, the municipality, or the geographical name. This directory was prepared as follows:

 

1- The code number of the administrative region consists of two digits starting with (01) for the first administrative region in the Kingdom and ends with the last number of the last administrative region (13).

 

2- The code number of the governorate consists of two digits also, within the administrative region that starts with (01) and ends with the number of the last governorate in the administrative region. As for the headquarters of Riyadh, Buraidah, Baha…etc, it takes the digits (00).

 

3- The code number of the municipality consists of 3 digits within the Emara or the governorate starting with (001) and ends with the number of the last Municipality in the Emara or the governorate.

 

4- The code number of the geographical name consists of 3 digits within the Headquarter of the Emara, the governorate or the municipality starting with (001) and ends with the number of the last geographical name within the Emara, the governorate or the municipality.

 

5- The number for a habitation consists of 2 digits within the number of the name that follows it, starts with (01) and ends with the number of the last inclusive geographical name inside the geographical name.

 

6- Public and private offices and work places that are located on highways between cities and villages took the numbers of inclusive geographical name annexed to the nearest geographical name and starts with the number (51).

 

7- The water sources community starts with the number (601) on the level of related administrative unit.

 

8- The number of the desert communities starts with the number (901) on the level of related administrative unit.
